My art is an exploration of the importance of change and releasing the past, especially the people and situations
that hinder personal growth, empowerment and transformation. The utilization of mythic figures, archetypes, motifs
and themes allows me to explore letting go of the familiar, safe and secure in order to travel to the dark, often
frightening, places of the soul. In this way, I've learned to trust my inner voice and honor my soul's need for
expression and challenge. . : Recent Posts : .

Friday, February 29, 2008Take It Further Challenge Meet Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The entire piece is 11 in. x 14 in. & consists of a fractal transparency with the lyrics to the song mounted on an 8 in. x 10 in. canvas board which is mounted on a larger canvas board painted with Tattered Angels' Glimmer Mist. The mask is purple rice paper collaged on a mask form with gold foiling, hand-dyed cheese cloth in blue & teal, dichroic glass as the 3rd eye, oval Czech glass buttons for the eyes, seed beads, pink sequins, rhinestones, Ancient Earth Echoes' Rainbow Fuschia fibers, meditating goddess charms as earrings, & love beads with an ankh.Today's meditation: "Dreams nourish the soul just as food nourishes the body. The pleasure of the search & of adventure feeds our dreams." - Paulo Coelho's The Pilgrimage Labels: Take It Further Thursday, February 28, 2008Addition to My Art Library "All over the world & throughout history amulets have offered protection against negative forces. The power of amulets is based on the underlying, widespread belief that all things in the natural world have a spirit & a power that links them together. Intricately beautiful or starkly simple, amulets come in an astonishing variety of guises: from stones, shells, & seeds, through animal tails, teeth, & claws, to beads, mirrors, needles, & bells. Used alone or combined in intricate patterns, they are all part of a system of natural & magical forces that can be used to redress evil influences. To unearth the mythology, symbolism, traditional practices, & modern uses of amulets, the author traveled to more than 30 countries around the world. She reveals her findings not only in unusual stories & commentary but also through more than 400 color photographs." Today's meditation: "It is necessary to run risks. We only properly understand the miracle of life when we allow the unexpected to happen." - Paulo Coelho's By the River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept Labels: art books Wednesday, February 27, 2008Addition to My Art Library "Working with world-famous Swarovski crystal beads, Laura McCabe creates luminous necklaces, earrings, pendants, & rings for beaders of every skill level. The author provides complete step-by-step instruction for 20 projects & presents 45 more in a photo gallery of design variations, teaching readers how to vary colors & shapes to create custom effects. All 65 designs are made with only 3 simple beadwork techniques: flat peyote stitch, tubular peyote stitch, & spiral rope. Laura McCabe also provides a chapter on making decorative embellishments, such as bezels, picots, berry clusters, & branch fringe. The concise instructions are illustrated with easy-to-follow illustrations."Today's meditation: "Start to do something. That way, time will be an ally, not an enemy." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: art books Tuesday, February 26, 2008Addition to My Art Library "According to Roman historian Pliny the Elder, encaustic was used as early as the 5th & 4th centuries B.C.E. It is made by melting beeswax with a small amount of resin & then adding pigment while the mixture is still molten. The artist works quickly out of the pot, for the wax begins to harden as soon as it leaves the heat source. Throughout the 1950s & 1960s, Jasper Johns was virtually the sole practitioner of encaustic. Today, thousands of artists have caught on to this ancient, luminous medium, yet most art lovers are still unaware of it. Mattera provides a fascinating history of the art & several excellent technical chapters on waxes, pigments, papers, brushes, etc. Studio safety takes high priority since, unlike quiet media like watercolor, this one brings with it the possibility of studio fires & wax burns. Though no book can capture the mutable incandescence of encaustic, this one provides enough inspiration & solid technical advice to kindle the interest of any artist."Today's meditation: "It is the experience of battle that strengthens the warrior of light." - Paulo Coelho's Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: art books Monday, February 25, 2008Addition to My Art Library "Collage is a versatile & dynamic medium suitable for artists with any level of skill & experience. Collage can be spontaneous & inexpensive when artists use materials at hand, such as magazines or newspapers, or collage can involve elaborate designs, precise detail, & exquisite craftsmanship. Materials suitable for collage are limited only by the creator's imagination & include papers of all kinds, fabric, photographs, & three-dimensional objects. Media such as watercolor, ink, & acrylics can be used to create varied effects & textures. Readers are provided with step-by-step instructions for increasingly sophisticated collage techniques. Charts highlight recommended materials such as adhesives, protective coatings, types of paper, & supports. Numerous examples of finished collages are displayed in color reproductions, from homey family projects to beautifully textured abstractions. While Leland & Williams excel at covering technique & practical concerns, they spend some time discussing design principles & the matching of materials to subject or theme.Today's meditation: "If the warrior of light waits for the ideal moment, he will never set off: it requires a touch of madness to take the next step." - Paulo Coelho's Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: art books Sunday, February 24, 2008What I'm Reading "A new breed of entrepreneurial monster has set up shop in the big city. Ruthless, ingenious murderers, they prey on the loved ones of those who live outside the law—knowing full well that criminals will never run to the police no matter how brutal the threat. So other avenues for justice must be explored—which is where ex-cop-turned-PI Matthew Scudder comes in. Scudder has no love for the drug dealers & poison peddlers who now need his help. Nevertheless, he is determined to do whatever it takes to put an elusive pair of thrill-kill extortionists out of business. For they are using the innocent to fuel their terrible enterprise."Today's meditation: "Lessons always arrive when you are ready for them, & if you can read the signs, you will learn everything you need to know in order to take the next step." - Paulo Coelho's The Zahir Labels: books Saturday, February 23, 2008The MoiraeI've been experimenting with some new paints, Tattered Angel's Glimmer Mist & LuminArte Shimmering Mist from Joggles, on the masks for the Moirae collage so these are definitely still a work-in-progress. So far, I'm much happier with the Tattered Angels products than the LuminArte. This mask is shades of iridescent blue & purple. I'm fairly happy with it at this point. The colors will work nicely with the fibers & beads that I've selected.
Today's meditation: "Seize every opportunity that life offers you because, when opportunities go, they take a long time to come back." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: Moirae Friday, February 22, 2008Take It Further ChallengeI'm starting to see some progress on this month's Take It Further Challenge. The background is an 8 x 10 transparency of a piece of fractal art that I created with a fractal generation program. Fractal art has always reminded me of the psychedelic art of the 1960s & the colors in this are exactly what I was looking for. The lyrics to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds run down the right-hand side. The transparency is mounted on an 8 x 10 canvas board. I've started the mask but didn't get as far this weekend as I would have liked because everything seemed to take forever to dry. But, the worst is over & now I can start the fun part... embellishing the mask.![]() Today's meditation: "I bear many scars, but I also carry with me moments that would not have happened if I had not dared to go beyond my limits." - Paulo Coehlo's Chronicle-I'm Not Happy Labels: Take It Further Wednesday, February 20, 2008Lunar EclipseTonight is the lunar eclipse & they're predicting that the skies will be clear enough to be able to see it. Let's hope they're right. The lunar eclipse is a sign of transformation & change. It signals a release of situations or behaviors that no longer support or serve you & in most cases, provides relief that a specific part of your life is complete so that you can move on. It means facing feminine issues, as well as, the loss of an expectation, an attitude, a situation or a role in life. Solar & lunar eclipses are surges of energy that facilitate issues & help you work toward achieving your goals. Actions taken at this time often do not have the expected results but do bring awareness & enlightenment. My astrologer tells me that in my chart the lunar eclipse means that February is about resolving a long standing issue & taking the time to consciously let something go in order to receive a dream come true starting in March. Today's meditation: "It is precisely the possibility of realizing a dream that makes life interesting." - Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist Labels: astrology, lunar eclipse Monday, February 18, 2008Succumbed to TemptationI tried to resist but failed miserably. I've registered for a couple of additional classes at Joggles... Fertile Earth with Susan Sorrell, the Creative Chick & Vision Mini Quilts with Mai Liis Peacock. Both classes start in March so that gives me some time to finish up some existing projects before I start something new. I'm also thinking about taking the Monoprinting / Collograph class at the SMFA this summer. It's 2 nights a week, 4 hours each night for 6 weeks. I need to think about that one a bit more though before I commit. Today's meditation: "It is always important to know when something has reach its end. Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters, it doesn't matter what we call it; what matters is to leave behind us in the past those moments in life that are over." - Paulo Coelho's The Zahir Labels: Fertile Earth, Joggles, SMFA, Vision Mini Quilts Sunday, February 17, 2008What I'm Reading "Carson & partner Harry Nautilus are the newly formed 2-man Psychopathological & Sociopathological Investigative Team, referred to as PSIT by the other members of the Mobile, AL, police force. While PSIT's official mandate is the investigation of murders committed by particularly horrendous killers, the formation of the team is actually a public relations scheme. Nevertheless, when a headless body turns up in a local park, PSIT has its 1st real case. At the autopsy, Carson meets new hire, Dr. Ava Davenelle, who is handling corpse-cutting duties. He's immediately smitten, though his polite advances are rejected. Turns out she has her own life, as well as, a job-threatening problem which Carson must solve while simultaneously identifying the killer who has meanwhile added several more headless victims to his growing list. Carson's secret weapon of detection is his brother, an insane mass-murderer who feeds him clues on the nature of madmen from an asylum."Today's meditation: "Life is made up of our attitudes. There are certain things that the gods force us to experience. Their reasons for doing so do not matter, & there is no point in doing everything we can to avoid them." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: books Friday, February 15, 2008Take It Further ChallengeFinally made up my mind... a mask based on Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Picture yourself in a boat on a river, With tangerine trees & marmalade skies Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Cellophane flowers of yellow & green, Towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, And she's gone. Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Ah... Ah... Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies, Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers, That grow so incredibly high. Newspaper taxis appear on the shore, Waiting to take you away. Climb in the back with your head in the clouds, And you're gone. Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Lucy in the sky with diamonds Ah... Ah... Picture yourself on a train in a station, With plasticine porters with looking glass ties, Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile, The girl with kaleidoscope eyes. Today's meditation: "If the warrior of light waits for the ideal moment, he will never set off; it requires a touch of madness to take the next step." - Paulo Coelho's Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: Take It Further Thursday, February 14, 2008Sumptuous Surfaces Here we are at week 4 of the Sumptuous Surfaces class at Joggles & this week we're starting to work with color. I'm going to be using another scene from a Colorado postcard as my design. I need to start digging through my stash to put together my color palette but right now I'm envisioning shades of green, blues, white & beige. Maybe some hints of pinks, violets, & yellows for wildflowers. Or perhaps I'll use autumn colors... greens, reds, oranges, yellows, golds... since autumn in Colorado is my favorite time of year.Today's meditation: "I discovered that searching can be as interesting as finding... as long as you overcome your fear." - Paulo Coelho's Brida Labels: Sumptuous Surfaces Wednesday, February 13, 2008The Search for Enlightenment Continues... "One of the most powerful of the Seth Books, this essential guide to conscious living clearly & powerfully articulates the furthest reaches of human potential, & the concept that we all create our own reality according to our individual beliefs. Having withstood the test of time, it is still considered 1 of the most dynamic & brilliant maps of inner reality available today."Today's meditation: "If you have a past with which you feel dissatisfied, then forget it, now. Imagine a new story for your life & believe in it. Focus only on the moments when you achieved what you desired, & that strength will help you to get what you want." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: books Tuesday, February 12, 2008The Search ContinuesToday's meditation: "Warriors of light frequently ask themselves what they are doing here. Very often they believe their lives have no meaning. That is why they are warriors of light. Because they make mistakes. Because they ask questions. Because they continue to look for a meaning. In the end, they will find it." - Paulo Coelho's The Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: life Monday, February 11, 2008Sumptuous Surfaces![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The 1st 3 weeks of the Sumptuous Surfaces class at Joggles was focused on designing, stitching & embellishing a monochromatic piece. I'm working on the 2 Colorado landscapes above using the supplies shown. It's been a bit of a challenge, but in a good way, using this color palette since I usually work in jewel tones or black, red & gold. Hope to have some pics to show soon. Today's meditation: "In the search for your destiny, you will often find yourself obliged to change direction." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: Sumptuous Surfaces Sunday, February 10, 2008What I'm Reading "In 1972, on the day of his sentencing, renowned artist & serial killer Marden Hexcamp is shot dead in the courtroom. Members of his Mansonesque band of followers are imprisoned or simply disappear. Fast-forward more than 30 years: A suspected prostitute is found murdered in a candlelit motel room, the first in a series of horrors suggesting Hexcamp's art remains alive & treacherous. Following a trail of beautiful & profoundly disturbing artwork, homicide detectives Carson Ryder & Harry Nautilus descend into the shocking world of the Death Collectors, people who spend vast sums to collect serial-killer memorabilia. As Ryder & Nautilus race to solve a 30-year conspiracy, it becomes sadly evident that at the intersection of art & madness, death is beauty, tragedy a memento, & suffering suitable for framing."Today's meditation: "Man needs to choose, not just accept, his destiny." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: books Saturday, February 09, 2008Feng Shui Issues & the Drafting TableOh, you knew it was just a matter of time, didn't you? I've been feeling creatively blocked lately. It could be because I've been sick with the flu for what seems like forever... it could be the weather... it could just be me adjusting to some other factors in my life... but, of course, I blame it on the location of the drafting table that I work on all of the time. I moved into my loft in July, 2005 & ALL of my furniture is still exactly where I originally put it. Except for the drafting table which was purchased after I moved it. It's been moved to every conceivable location in my studio as I search for THE place where I'll be most comfortable working. This time though, I decided that I really needed to take a hard look at how my entire studio was arranged & move some other things around to open the space up a bit. As a result, the wire bins holding all of my art magazines were moved over against the wall beside my bookshelves & easel, the bench where stacks of my art books live was shifted over (Sorry, whoever is living in the unit below me now. I promise I'm finished sliding furniture across the concrete floor.), the table holding my fabric paints was pushed up against the back of the bench, the infamous drafting table was moved over closer to my living area where there's a little more natural light, & the mutant dust bunny population was destroyed. The space looks much bigger now & there's a path for the creative energy to flow. I'm also not looking directly at the brick wall every time I look up from my work. Now I'm looking at my bookshelves & a wall display of art dolls bought from Ancient Ones. Let's see if this gives me a new perspective on things. Today's meditation: "The warrior of light knows that he is free to choose his desires, & he makes these decisions with courage, detachment & sometimes with just a touch of madness." - Paulo Coelho's The Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: life Friday, February 08, 2008Take It Further Challenge I'm continuing to work the concept of "What are you old enough to remember?" for this month's Take It Further Challenge. I've been listening to music from the 1960's... listening to the biography of Timothy Leary on my iPod, researching imagery from that period of time, gathering some quotes, etc. My original thought was to do a collage but that seems like taking the easy way out. An art doll is still a possibility. Maybe a mask. Today's meditation: "There are moments in life when we need to trust blindly in intuition." - Paulo Coelho's The Zahir Labels: Take It Further Thursday, February 07, 2008Year of the Rat Well, let's see... I was born in 1960 which was the Year of the Rat... 2008 is the Year of the Rat... & the Chinese New Year was on my birthday this year... Seems auspicious to me.Being the 1st sign of the Chinese zodiac, Rats are leaders, pioneers & conquerors. They're charming, passionate, charismatic, practical & hardworking. Rats are endowed with great leadership skills & are the most highly organized, meticulous, & systematic of the 12 signs. Intelligent & cunning, Rats are highly ambitious & strong-willed people who are keen & unapologetic promoters of their own agendas. They are energetic & versatile & can usually find their way around obstacles, & adapt to various environments easily. A Rat's natural charm & sharp demeanor make it an appealing friend, but Rats are highly exclusive & selective when choosing friends. So they often have only a few very close friends whom they trust. Behind their smiles & charm, Rats can be terribly obstinate & controlling, insisting on having things their way no matter what the cost. They tend to have immense control of their emotions, which they may use as a tool to manipulate & exploit others, both emotionally & mentally. Rats are masters of mind games & can be very dangerous, calculating & downright cruel if the need arises. Quick-tempered & aggressive, they won't think twice about exacting revenge on someone who hurt them. Rats need to learn to relax, as they can be quite obsessed with detail, intolerant, strict, demanding of order, obedience, & perfection. A valuable lesson for Rats is to learn to consider others before themselves, at least sometimes, & to avoid forcing their ideas onto others. Rats are fair in their dealings & expect the same from others . They can be deeply affronted if they feel they have been deceived or that their trust has been abused. At times, they set their targets too high, whether in relation to their friends or in their career. But, as the years pass, they become more idealistic & tolerant. If they can develop their sense of self & realize that it still leaves room for others in their life as well, Rats can find true happiness. According to tradition, Rats often carry heavy karma & at some point in their life may face an identity crisis or feelings of guilt. Rats are said to often have to work very long & hard for everything they may earn or have in life. However, a Rat born during the day is said to have things a bit easier than Rats who are born at night. Rats born during the night may face extreme hardships & suffering throughout their life. In general, Rats should guard themselves against hedonism, as it may lead to self-destruction. Positive traits: meticulous, intelligent, shrewd, charismatic, charming, ambitious, practical, industrious, eloquent, & artistic Negative traits: controlling, obstinate, back-stabbing, resentful, manipulative, cruel, vengeful, power-driven, critical Today's meditation: "Body & soul need new challenges." - Paolo Coelho's The Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: life Wednesday, February 06, 2008I think This Says It AllToday's meditation: "The warrior of light is not afraid to weep over ancient sorrows or to feel joy at new discoveries. When he feels the moment has arrived, he drops everything & goes off on some long-dreamed-of adventure." - Paulo Coelho's Manual of the Warrior of Light Labels: life Tuesday, February 05, 2008What I'm Listening To "Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, & the mystery & promise of the open road, Kerouac's classic novel of freedom & longing defined what it meant to be "beat" & has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, & seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that "set them free." Based on Kerouac's adventures with Neal Cassady, On the Road tells the story of 2 friends whose 4 cross-country road trips are a quest for meaning & true experience. Written with a mixture of sad-eyed naïveté & wild abandon, & imbued with Kerouac's love of America, his compassion for humanity, & his sense of language as jazz, On the Road is the quintessential American vision of freedom & hope, a book that changed American literature & changed anyone who has ever picked it up."Today's meditation: "The world lies in the hands of those who have the courage to dream & who take the risk of living out their dreams -- each according to his or her own talent." - Paulo Coelho's The Valkyries Labels: audiobooks Monday, February 04, 2008What I'm Listening to "Two ebullient young men are engaged in a passionate search for dharma, or truth. Their major adventure is the pursuit of the Zen way, which takes them climbing into the high Sierras to seek the lesson of solitude, a lesson that has a hard time surviving their forays into the pagan groves of San Francisco's Bohemia with its marathon wine-drinking bouts, poetry jam sessions, experiments in "yabyum," & similar nonascetic pastimes."Today's meditation: "All battles in life serve to teach us something, even the battles we lose." - Paulo Coelho's The Fifth Mountain Labels: audiobooks Sunday, February 03, 2008What I'm Reading "When Albert Einstein told Franklin Roosevelt in 1939 that the atomic bomb was possible, he did not tell the president about another discovery he had made, something so extreme & horrific it remained a secret . . . until now. When 12-year-old Daphne Marrity takes a videotape labeled Pee-wee's Big Adventure from her grandmother's house, neither she nor her college-professor father, Frank Marrity, has any idea that the theft has drawn the attention of both the Israeli Secret Service & an ancient European cabal of occultists — or that within hours they'll be visited by her long-lost grandfather, who is also desperate to get that tape. And when Daphne's teddy bear is stolen, a blind assassin nearly kills Frank, & a phantom begins to speak to her from a switched-off television set, Daphne & her father find themselves caught in the middle of a murderous power struggle that originated long ago in Israel & Germany but now crashes through Los Angeles & out to the Mojave Desert. To survive, they must quickly learn the rules of a dangerous magical chess game & use all their cleverness & courage — as well as their love & loyalty to each other — to escape a fate more profound than death." Today's meditation: "Only one thing makes a dream impossible: the fear of failure." - Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist Labels: books Saturday, February 02, 2008MoiraeI have a number of projects underway right now but not a lot of pictures yet. The main project that I'm working on is a mask collage of the Moirae (The Fates). This piece is 24 in. x 36 in. which is much larger than I usually work. Here's some of the imagery & the color schemes... ![]() First we have Clotho who spins the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. Her mask is going to be in the colors of dawn... soft blues & pinks to symbolize the beginning of life. Then we have Lachesis who measures the thread of life with her rod. Her colors are going to be greens & garden colors to symbolize life in full-bloom. And finally we have Atropos who chooses when someone dies & cuts the thread of life. Her colors are going to be the colors of twilight to symbolize the ending of life. In addition to this project, I'm working on my piece for February's Take It Further Challenge, as well as, the 1st piece for the Sumptuous Surfaces class at Joggles. Even though the Domino Mini Books class has also started, I'll probably wait for awhile to start on those lessons.Today's meditation: "When you want something, the whole Universe conspires to help you realize your desire." - Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist Labels: collage, masks, Moirae Friday, February 01, 2008Take It Further Challenge - February The February Take It Further Challenge has been posted by Sharon over at In A Minute Ago. This month's challenge is "What are you old enough to remember?"Hmmmmm..... I decided to Google each year starting with the year I was born, 1960, & see what images came up that resonated with me. Even though I may not have been old enough to remember the actual event, I still consider them to be a part of the fabric of my life. It's amazing how much things have changed in the 48 years I've been alive. And, of course, some things never change like war & dishonest, lying politicians. When I think back to my childhood & teenage years, I remember the Kennedy assasination, man walking on the moon for the 1st time, the Sonny & Cher Show, Allen Ginsberg, the Stonewall Riots, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, the Viet Nam War, Jimi Hendrix, the students being shot at Kent State, Janis Joplin, Woodstock, the Summer of Love, hippies & disco. Hippies were a very big thing with me when I was a kid... the tie dye, the long hair, the clothes, the jewelry. I'm still fascinated by that period of history. It's funny the things that end up shaping us as a person. Unfortunately, I grew up in a small southern baptist town & I've spent my entire life rebelling against that environment & everything it stood for. The only way my parents could get me to church on Sunday was to promise to take me to the park afterwards to see the hippies. I was absolutely fascinated by them even though I wasn't really old enough to understand what they stood for. On some intuitive level though I knew they symbolized freedom. Anyway, I think my piece for February's Take It Further Challenge is going to start with a collage based on psychedelic art & maybe include a beaded art doll. We'll see how the time goes. This month's color palette just isn't going to be a fit but maybe I'll come back to it at a later date & time for another project. Or not, as I rarely use any brown or beige in my work at all. So, join me here each Friday night in February as I post my progress to, as 1 of my favorite counterculture icons, Timothy Leary, would say, "Turn on, tune in, & drop out". Magic mushrooms & patchouli incense are optional.
