What I'm Reading

"A chubby girl with smudged pink harlequin glasses & a habit of stealing Heath Bars from the local five-&-dime, Elizabeth Taube is the only child of parents whose indifference to her is the 1 sure thing in her life. When her search for love & attention leads her into the arms of her junior-high-school English teacher, things begin to get complicated. And even her friend Mrs. Hill, a nearly blind, elderly black woman, can't protect her when real love -- exhilarating, passionate, heartbreaking -- enters her life in the gorgeous shape of Huddie Lester."

"I Used to Be Snow White But I Drifted"

Mae West has always been 1 of my favorite actresses because she was always true to herself. She never really cared what people said about her & she was definitely ahead of her time. As I was working on my list of art goals for 2008, I noticed that all of the subject matter selected so far is fairly heavy & I decided that I was also going to need a series to work on that would be fun. So, I'm thinking of a series of collages, either paper or fiber, based on quotes attributed to Mae West:
  • "Why don't you come up & see me sometime? Come up on Wednesday, that's amateur night."

  • "Dolores is learning the meaning of the word repentance. It's how you feel when you get caught."

  • "When I'm good, I'm very good but when I'm bad, I'm better."

  • "I used to be Snow White but I drifted."

  • "When choosing between 2 evils, I always like to try the 1 I've never tried before."

  • "Goodness, what lovely diamonds! Goodness had nothing to do with it."

  • "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough."

  • "So many men, so little time."

Nostalgia is a Strange Thing

Saturday Night Fever was released 30 years ago today. When I look at that number, it seems so long ago. When I think about seeing the movie for the 1st time, it seems like yesterday almost. A time when all I had to worry about was having the right dress & knowing all the right dance steps. Where did all of that time go? My life has turned out to be nothing like I expected. And I wouldn't change a thing.

So, in celebration, I'm watching Saturday Night Fever in the studio while I work tonight. And remembering a time when life was much less complicated. And much less interesting.

Conjunction of Jupiter & Pluto

December 11th marks the conjunction of Jupiter (abundance, opportunity, joy & expansion) & Pluto (transformation, power, profound understanding & wealth) in Sagittarius. Jupiter conjunct (new beginnings) Pluto happens once every 12 years & the last time they were conjunct in Sagittarius was 256 years ago. This is the time to ask ourselves where we feel ready to open to something new or to take a risk that involves letting go of a fundamental way of being. What is trying to manifest in our lives at this time? The Sagittarius New Moon on December 9th kicks off this powerful event & will last through the end of January 2008. In addition, the next 12 year cycle of power, expansion, abundance, & growth begins.

So, in order to take advantage of this opportune planetary configuration, I'm posting my 2008 art goals.

"Take It Further" Design Challenge

I've decided to participate in Sharon Boggon's "Take It Further" design challenge which begins on 01/01/08. On the 1st of each month, Sharon will post the key concept for that month on her blog, In a Minute Ago. The challenge is to take the idea, expand on it & develop a resolved design by the end of the month. In other words, interpret the idea & apply it to fiber or paper. Each month she will present 2 options. The 2nd option will be a color scheme or design element to develop into a resolved design. We then have the option to work with the original key concept, the color scheme or design element, or both.

One of my goals for 2008 is to begin keeping a journal so I thought this would help me get started & keep me working on it. I also liked the fact that we could work on either fabric or paper.

Sharon offers a number of online classes at Joggles: Personal Library of Stitches, Encrusted Crazy Quilting, & Sumptuous Surfaces. Her classes are worth every penny. Sharon invests an amazing amount of time & effort in preparing the class handouts & the information you receive in the class is invaluable. Sharon also ran the "Take a Stitch Tuesday (TAST)" challenge in 2007 which was really interesting.

Twilight

I've been spending time in my studio lately re-working "Twilight". This is the last of the "UFOs" laying around the studio that I wanted to finish by the end of the year. 2007 has been an exercise in false starts, wrong paths & lack of focus so I want to make sure that I don't carry any projects over into the new year. I want to be able to make a fresh start on 01/01/08.
