Transformation - Imagery on Fabric

Somewhere along the way I completely lost control of December & forgot to post my final project "Transformation" that I created for my "Imagery on Fabric" class at the Massachusetts Institute of Art.

The book consists of collages using handmade papers, batik fabric, embellished solvent transfers, gold foiling, postcards, & tarot cards from the "Goddess" tarot deck.

My Mantra for 2006

"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Being the self-absorbed creature that I am, it's that time of the year when I sit down & take a look at the things I've accomplished & make some plans for the next year. All things considered, 2005 was a productive year:
  • Launched my blog.
  • Re-designed my website.
  • Joined the following organizations: Fort Point Arts Community, Surface Design Association, American Quilter's Society, Bead Society of Greater New York, New England Bead Society, & International Society of Altered Book Artists.
  • Attended the Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, WI.
  • Received my Artist Certification from the Boston Redevelopment Agency.
  • Moved to a loft that's big enough for me to have dedicated studio space. Actually, most of the loft is studio & just a tiny corner of it is living space.
  • Took some great online classes: "Transformative Dollmaking" with Pamela Hastings, "Wrapped Spirit Doll" with Mai-Liis Peacock, "Ancient Icons" with Pearl Red Moon, "Fiber Collages" & "Monoprinting" with Susan Sorrell.
  • Returned to art school at the Massachusetts Institute of Art in the Fall semester & took "Imagery on Fabric" with Peter Madden & Janet Kawada.
  • Signed up with Business Volunteers for the Arts to provide pro-bono marketing services for organizations sponsored by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston.

As a result of all this, I've met alot of interesting new people both on- & off-line & had the chance to experiment with lots of new ideas, materials & techniques. All of this experimentation has enabled me to start narrowing my focus to what I really want to devote my time to which is fabric collages.

2006 is going to be all about creating at least 1 new fabric collage each week, getting published, entering shows, & marketing my work. Of course, this is in addition to my full-time job & taking art classes at the Massachusetts Institute of Art & the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Wishing all of you health, wealth, love, success & happiness in 2006!

Embroiderer's & Quilter's Sourcebook - Thompson Posted by Picasa

"A dazzling variety of styles is included in this much-needed overview of historical & world textiles. An array of techniques is illustrated, from patchwork, quilting, applique, beadwork, counted thread & free stitch to goldwork & metal thread, whitework, smocking & machine embroidery.

The textiles featured in each section appear in chronological order from the 17th to the 21st centuries, giving the reader a fascinating historic overview of the technique's development, from its origins to the modern form we know today.

This book is also a unique cultural reference, providing a captivating insight into textiles from every corner of the globe, with sumptuous fabrics, materials & methods typical of a range of countries. From the heavily beaded headdresses of Pakistan, through the bright, eye-catching tassels seen in Thai temples to 1930s British applique, each exquisite piece reflects the rich cultural heritage from which it originates."

What I'm Reading

Midwinter of the Spirit - Phil Rickman Posted by Picasa

"'Exorcism' is a word no longer favoured by the Church of England. 'Deliverance Ministry' sounds more caring, less sinister... so why not a role for a woman? The Rev. Merrily Watkins, parish priest and single mother, can hardly turn it down, even when the retiring exorcist, a serious opponent of women clergy, ensures that she's exposed to the job at its most terrifying.

And the situation gets no easier. As an early winter slices through the old city of Hereford, a body is found in the River Wye, an ancient church is desecrated, and there are even indications of evil in the Hereford Cathedral itself, where the tomb of St. Thomas Cantilupe lies in fragments."
